Final Four Revealed on THE VOICE Season 16 Semi-Finals Recap

Monday’s “The Voice” show had a British Invasion as the Top 8 artists performed duets of popular The Beatles songs, and also as a promotion of new film “Yesterday” which opens June 28, 2019.

Tuesday’s results show welcomed back Emily Ann Roberts, previously on Team Blake to perform her new single. Kelly Clarkson performed with Team member Rod Stokes, and by the end of the night, ‘Voice fans had their Top 4 artists revealed who’d be heading into next week’s finale show.

ANDREW SEVENER  (Team Blake)
Andrew got a Texas Country music song.  He said his grandpa got him into Texas Country music and passed just before “The Voice” Battles, Andrew teared-up.  Andrew pointed-out to Blake that he’s the only one-chair-turn that’s left and was grateful for Blake choosing him to be on his Team

KIM & SHAWN – Kim Cherry and Shawn Sounds paired-up to perform The Beatles song “Eleanor Rigby.”  They both said it’s a little bit “dark and cold” song.

GYTH RIGDON (Team Blake)

Gyth selected the song “God Bless the USA.”  Blake said “this is not just the perfect song for this moment but perfect for Gyth” because he’s All-American.  The song had never been done on “The Voice.” Gyth gave a shout-out to the heros in the military in the song.  Gyth stated that his dad is his biggest supporter in his music.  Blake predicted that his performance is “going to be big.”

Kelly said “I feel like you can’t critique this song because you’re going to hell or something.”  She reacted that it wasn’t her favorite.  But thought it was cool and never been done on the show.  John said it’s interesting that he chose this song during the night they celebrated the British invasion (The Beatles).  He called it “a powerful rendition.”  Blake reacted, referring to Kelly and John’s comments, “clearly we put on our competive jackets” and he thought it was one of Gyth’s best performances. “Welcome to the finale brother,” Blake finished.

Blake surprised an artist by inviting her to perform on “The Voice” stage.  Blake said it’s an experience that’s incredible. More to come soon.

Next Monday, the Top 4 will sing one orginal song.

KIM CHERRY (Team Blake)

Kim was Instantly Saved last week. Blake said he wasn’t surprised because Kim always steps-up to the plate. Kim took Kelly’s advice and chose a song to just sing and belt out – “Together Again” by Janet Jackson.  Kim dedicated the song to her mother who passed away on Mother’s Day last year.  Kim said she wants to honor the woman that she wants to live up to.

Kelly thanked Kim for singing.  All the while, the audience couldn’t stop cheering.  Kelly stated that Kim would be “so rad on Broadway” and she has a huge voice.  John loved that he and Kim were wearing matching colors – orange.  He told her she’s very multi-talented and it’s very impressive.  Blake stated let there never be a question ever again if Kim is a great singer.  He told Kim that she couldn’t have done better.

MAELYN & ROD – Maelynn Jarmon and Rod Stokes performed duet of “Yesterday.”

CARTER LLOYD HORNE (Team Blake)

Carter told Blake that he can’t believe that he’s in the Top 8.  Carter received a phone call from his grandma who got him his first guitar and started him to singing.  He selected “Take Me to Church” song by Hozier.  Blake said Carter is only 20-years-old, but sounds like he’s 60 with his rich voice.  Mari, previously on Team Adam, called Carter to encourage him.  Blake advised Carter to ‘mop the floor” with this song and to bring his A-game since it’s the Semi-Finals.

Kelly said she thought his voice suited the song very well and it was a cool genre for him.  However, Kelly pointed-out that it was a little pitchy in the beginning.  “You have a really, really rad tone.  It’s very different.” She said she didn’t want to bum him out though.  John agreed that it was hard to find the key in the beginning and Carter didn’t find it until the chorus  He reassured that it happens to all of them.  Blake agreed, “none of us want it to happen, but it does happen. ”  He added,  “you created this fan base. You’re here because people love you.” Blake finished that hopefully that will carry him over.

ROD STOKES (Team Kelly)

Rod has been on Blake’s Team, John’s Team, and is now Kelly’s only artist left who said he stands-out so many ways. He chose to sing “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gil.  Rod sang the same song at his grandparents funeral.  Rod stated that it would mean so much if he made it to the finale.  Tearing-up, Rod said that his grandparents meant the world to him.  Former Team Kelly member, Jej, sent him luck via a face-time phone call.  Kelly told Rod that Blake must be worried because he let him go!

John said it was lovely and not one of his technically best performances. He said he felt that he sang a song that meant something to him.  Adam called it a nice change of pace. Adam called him amazing and it’s weird that he’s not on his Team.  Blake loved how connected Rod was to the song.  Sometimes emotion can invade the technical side to a song which he’ll take any day.  Kelly said her favorite part about coaching Rod is that they’re so in tuned and insynced to each other.  She’s happy he’s on her team because “this is home.”

GYTH & DEXTER – sang “Hey Jude.”  Gyth said he heard this song when his parents were getting a divorce. He said it’s the meaning of hope for him.

MAELYN JARMON (Team Legend)

She was the only artist to crack the Top 10 on iTunes.  John selected “Stay” song by Rihanna.  Maelyn called the song a risk and chose to sing the song about her career.  Her parents are her biggest supporters.  Maelyn said it feels amazing to do something (music) that her dad wanted to do.  John said Maelyn applied her own vision and artistry to the song.  He said he can hear her on the radio, and she wants to STAY on “The Voice.”

Adam said “amazing” and she definitely will win The Voice because she emodies what the show is all about.  There’s no reason why she should NOT win and he called her a front-runner, “best singer on the show.”  Blake said it’s getting harder to find new great stuff to say aobut her. He said she’s “spot-on” every time she gets on stage  Kelly said her favorite thing is seeing Maelyn progress and the lack of control on this performance is what she loved.  Kelly said it was her favorite performance.  John called Maelyn the best vocalist on the show and she nails it every single time.  “I’m so proud to work with you,” finished John.

ANDREW & CARTER – sang “Help” by The Beatles.  Andrew called “Help” a very special song.  “If you have no one to turn to, finally it ruptures out like a volcano,” stated Andrew about the song.

DEXTER ROBERTS (Team Blake)

Blake noted that there’s a lot of Country artists left.  The song he chose was “Here Without You” by Three Doors Down.  It’s a perfect time for Dexter to take a chance in order to separate himself from everybody else from the pack.  He said when Dexter goes off mic, he’s still on pitch.  Dexter stated that the song is about thinking about somebody and missing them. He said he’s thinking about his nieces and nephews and hopes to find a special girl someday, get married and have kids of his own.

Kelly said she loves his voice since the Blinds and called it very clever to step outside that genre and sing a song that can be done as Country.  Blake said “it was a good move” and it was Dexter’s idea.  He never done it with a band, only acousitcally.  Blake siad when he sings a song, he’s attacking it with his voice.

SHAWN SOUNDS (Team Legend)

Shawn picked a meaningful song for the kids that inspire him every day.  John said Shawn made it clear last week that he’s the best singer.  The song “A Song For You” by Donny Hathaway.  Shawn said most people stay away from Donny Hathaway songs because they’re big songs.  John said Shawn will show that he’s a force to be reckoned with.  Shawn said his students come from all backgrounds and it’s important for him to be there for the kids.  He dedicated his performance to the school he teaches at.

Adam said Shawn put on a singing clinic and taught everybody how to sing. “You do it perfectly and flawless and so heartfelt,” stated Adam.  Kelly said that was by far her favorite performance.  John said Shawn is absolutely incredible and has given the best performances in the past two weeks.  “I’m just lucky to be able to coach both you and Maelyn” and covererd his prior statement about Maelyn being the best by stating that they are BOTH amazing singers.

At the top of the show, six-time ‘Voice champion, coach Blake Shelton performed his latest single called “God’s Country.”

Emily Ann Roberts, previously on Team Blake, returned to “The Voice” stage to perform her latest single.   Photo of Emily’s time on “The Voice” flashed on the screens behind her on stage while she performed the Country song.

Rod Stokes sang “Brother” by NEEDTOBREATHE.  Coach Kelly said she’s been dying to sing a voice like his her whole life and hopes he doesn’t go home.  Kelly said he has such a classic voice and can sing, Chris Stapleton, Michael McDonald, Ray Charles and his voice just dominates.

Shawn Sounds sang “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars.  Though Sounds had some shaky moments during his performance, his coach John Legend said he’s so fortunate to work with Shawn and his voice is so speical.  John also said Shawn’s voice does it all and so beautifully.

Blake said everybody’s season ends next week and that it’s incredible where they’re at right now. “This is not the end of the road for you.”  Kelly told Rod that she’s so proud of him and he has a rare voice.  She’s enjoyed working with him. All three of them are winners, “no one is a loser,” stated Kelly.   John said he gets so much joy working with Shawn and he has musicality in him.  John added that said Shawn works hard and masters his craft.
