THE GUILT TRIP is the comedic adventure of Andy Brewster (SETH ROGEN) and Joyce Brewster (BARBRA STREISAND), a son and mother who have grown apart over the years, yet are drawn together closer than ever before, by way of a sub compact car, for the duration of a 3,000 mile sales pitch.
Joyce Brewster’s husband died when Andy was young and she has lived alone since Andy left for college years ago. Joyce has become very set in her ways eating M&M’s in bed, collecting frog nicknacks and spending time with her book club friends. Living in this sheltered world is safe but Joyce’s life is lacking any real passion.
Andy Brewster is a down-on-his-luck scientist trying to be an inventor who actually needs to learn to be a better salesman and fast. Andy has planned to fly to New Jersey to visit his mom before renting an SUV and driving cross country to pitch the “all natural liquid cleaner” he has invented (and bottled) in person at the headquarters of major retailers.
The awkward family fun starts at the happiest place on Earth, the Newark Airport, where Andy receives an enthusiastically loving and thoroughly embarrassing welcome home from his mom and the mutual irritating begins. Andy spends some time hanging around with Joyce and he sees his mother as being a little bit too settled, and not realizing that there’s a lot of fun stuff that she could still be doing instead of focusing all her energy on him!
Later Joyce reveals an unsettling secret, that Andy was named after an old flame, her first boyfriend Andy Margolis. Despite the bizarre nature of this news Andy still just wants to make his mom happy, and that gives him the idea to bring his mom across country with him, hoping to reunite her with this love of her life (as a surprise). Joyce thinks her son just wants to spend time with her and to further complicate matters she now wants to stop by and visit Andy’s old high school sweet heart along the way.
The adventure begins at the car rental place when the SUV Andy wants to rent is changed into an economy car by a coupon and gentle nagging leaving Andy saying “…now we just have to stop by the circus and drop off our clowns.”
The cross country drive is filled with craziness, especially Joyce’s traveling CD box set of choice “Middle Sex” something you definitely do not want to listen to with your mother, especially not on a road trip, definitely not.
Every stop along the way is an opportunity for Andy but every sales pitch is a strikeout. Andy becomes so frustrated that he finally breaks down and tells his mom things aren’t going so well. Then it’s one cat out of the bag after another until Joyce finds out about Andy’s plan to reunite her and Andy Margolis in San Francisco at the end of the trip.
This mother and son duo might have mixed-up agendas, but ultimately Andy and Joyce want the same thing, to open up their worlds, which in turn allows them to see each other in ways they never have before.
This movie is full of surprisingly realistic mother and son quality time, both funny and heart warming with just enough drama to keep anyone and their mom laughing for the whole trip. Remember to stick around for some funny excerpt scenes at the end credits.
