Early Review

Hollywood Junket was privileged to attend an advanced screening of NBC’s upcoming Musical Drama “Smash” Starring American Idol Alumni, Katharine McPhee

From the first introduction of Katharine Mcphee on American Idol in 2005 I felt she had all the makings to be one of the entertainment industries “one-stop-shop” entertainers. Runner up to Taylor Hicks on season five and after many release date changes by her record label RCA, On Jan 30 of 2007 Mcphee put out the self titled album KATHARINE MCPHEE debuting at # 2 behind Nora Jones on the Billboard Charts.

The Vocals, Grace and Beauty of McPhee, in my opinion is unrivaled…but her character on “Smash”? Not so.

“Smash”, executive produced by the Emmy and Oscar winning, Steven Spielberg follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers in the Big Apple who all have one goal in common- to be a “Smash” on the Great White Way of Broadway.

Megan Hilty (l) and Katharin McPhee (r) in SMASH.

The NBC series is a show within a show, centered around the desire to create a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, “Its been done before and it flopped” says many of the characters. That doesn’t stop the writing duo of Julia Houston (Debra Messing) and Tom Levitt (Christian Borle) from exploring the possible resurrection and rebirth of “Marylin the Musical”. Even though Julia Houston is in the middle of trying to adopt a child with long time husband Frank Houston (Brian d’Arcy James) her focus is torn when she has the opportunity to create another Broadway Hit.

A rivalry soon forms between the youthful inexperienced Midwestern beauty Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee), who is trying to find fame in the Big City against all odds, and staged veteran Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty) who is determined to leave the chorus and finally get her big break. A tenacious producer Eileen (Angelica Houston) discovers the “Marilyn” project and despite being in the middle of a nasty divorce, jumps on board enlisting one of the writers of “Marilyn” Tom Levitts nemesis and brilliant director, Derek (Jack Davenport), whose talent is matched by his sleazy, cunning and egocentric ways. (Jaime Cepero) stars as Personal Assistant, Ellis and (Raza Jaffery) plays Love interest and supporter of Karen Cartwright.

Extended sneak preview below courtesy of NBC:

“Smash” is…well, a SMASH! Katharine McPhee is PHEENOMENOL! I’m telling you this is going to be McPhee’s breakout year. I smell many Emmy Nomination in this show’s future. McPhee radiates on screen! Her deep dark pools of brown eyes pull you in while her beautiful Smile Skips your heart. Her voice is forever McPhee and her dancing and acting abilities, were everything I expected from this talented American Idol Alumni.

For any of those who crave Broadway, or to make their way to the Great White Way, beginning Monday February 6th on NBC at 10/9c after “The Voice” can tune into “SMASH” where Broadway’s Great White Way will be brought into your living room every week!
