Monday’s episode of “The Voice” featured the first ever reunion show for the coaches. Shakira was the only coach missing in person, but sent a video message. Previous coaches Gwen Stefani, Usher, and Cee Lo Green returned to the show to help advise current coaches with their Top 8 contestants. Cee Lo was chosen to help Blake Shelton, Usher was enlisted by Adam Levine, and Gwen had the double duty of contributing her input to both Team Christina and Team Pharrell.
Last week’s Results Show left Christina with two artists – Kimberly Nichole and India Carney. Team Adam with only one artist – Joshua Davis. Pharrell holding his own with Sawyer Fredericks and Koryn Hawthorne. Blake was the only coach that kept all three of his team members – Meghan Linsey, Corey Kent White, and Hannah Kirby. This automatically puts him at an advantage of possibly winning the competition once again! Oh, what will Adam do? It will soon have to be call Blake’s Voice, or maybe NBC will give him his own spin-off show.
The Top 8 performed a 2-song medley “Hey Brother/Wake Me Up” in beautiful harmony. Watch their performance video below:
Hannah Kirby sang “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner
Advised by Cee Lo, he said he would have stolen Hannah from Blake had he been on the show. Blake thinks that Cee Lo and Hannah are cut from the same cloth. Hannah wanted to put on a bigger show for this performance than she’s ever done. A kids choir joined her on stage with singing and dancing.
Coaches Comments: Christina said that the choir had Cee Lo’s stamp on it, and “nice touch”. Pharrell was happy for her “waving the flag for everyone out there who’s different.” Adam remarked that it had Cee Lo written all over it and thought it was great. Coach Blake told Hannah she sang the song perfectly.
Meghan Linsey sang “Something” by The Beatles
Coaches Comments: Adam thought her performance was “awesome.” He knew it wasn’t Blake’s song choice and loved to see a song performed not in “Blake’s wheelhouse,” and it was “badass.” Coach Blake called it a “classy” and important performance with her confidence growing. He expects to see her in the finale.
Corey Kent White sang “When I See You Smile” by Bad English
Cee Lo complimented Corey’ audition when he sang Zac Brown. Cee Lo was wearing a cow boy shirt and told Corey he was their to help him embellish upon what Country can be.
Coaches Comments: Adam said he wanted an explosion, but “it was awesome”. Coach Blake replied that you can’t have an explosion without those settle moments leading up to it. He called it Corey’s break-out performance and the best one yet. “It’s what every artist hopes for – when the right song lands with the right artist.”
Joshua Davis sang “Fields of Gold”
Joshua got advice from two coach champions – Adam and Usher. Joshua chose the song because he said it feels like “an old folk ballad”. He also said this song tells his story.
Coaches Comments: Former coach Blake told him it was refreshing to see Joshua to get back to what he’s best at. Adam told him there are so many powerhouse vocals, and loves that Joshua did something distinctively different and stunningly well.
Kimberly Nichole sang “Creep” by Radiohead
Christina wanted Kimberly to have an emotional moment and to let her guard down. Gwen Stefani’s advice was “it’s not about hitting those notes, it’s about feeling them.” Kimberly got emotional during rehearsal because she could connect her experience on the show with the song.
Coaches Comments: The coaches gave her a standing ovation for a very powerful performance she delivered. Pharrell exclaimed “if that’s what insecurity sounds like, we could all use some!” Adam reacted that never before has there been a version of that song so unique and powerful. Blake couldn’t believe that she nailed it with only a few days of practice. Christina labeled Kimberly as “an artist” and what the competition is about by making the song her own.
India Carney sang “Over the Rainbow”
India recalled when she first sang the song at age 10 or 11 at summer camp. Christina said the song was made for her. Gwen recommended India to add personality to her performance and said she reminded her of Anita Baker.
Coaches Comments: Blake told her she sounded more than beautiful and called it “magic.” Christina was happy to see India embody and embrace the song, and her performance was “gorgeous.”
Season 7 ‘Voice runner-up Matt McAndrew from Team Adam returned to “The Voice” stage to perform and promote his new single “Counting on Love”
Sawyer Fredericks sang “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Sawyer got a bit star-struck when he met Gwen. He revealed that he owns 11 guitars. Gwen said she was interested in the fact that “he was being” instead of performing. She called his style “raw and honest.” People gravitate to what’s real which is why she can see him on the radio.
Coaches Comments: What Adam love the most about Sawyer’s voice is it’s purity and rawness and ability to translate any song into something powerful. Coach Pharrell asked every Sawyer fan to vote, along with every kid that has a dream.
Koryn Hawthorne sang “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys
Last week, Koryn won America’s “Instant Save” vote. Koryn said it felt really good to get Gwen’s input. Koryn was confident that she’d be able to tap into the emotions required for the song.
Coaches Comments: Koryn got a standing ovation from the coaches and audience at the end of her performance. Adam told her “you are the dream that is the show.” He commended her leap of maturity during “The Voice” process. Christina said “people either make it or break it” at this point in the competition. She said they either break or thrive and Koryn is thriving 100%. Pharrell said everyone is inspired by Koryn.
NIGHT TWO -TOP 8 RESULTS SHOW
The first contestant announced to be saved was Adam’s only artist left – Joshua Davis.
Blake said that his team has done everything they could have done to stay in tact. Christina said the audience isn’t aware of how much behind-the-scenes work that happens over one week, and Pharrell is “super-proud” of his team. Adam talked about his strategy with Josh which is it’s about what Josh wants to do.
Rozzi Crane, who is the first artist to be signed with Adam Levine’s Record label, “222 Records” performed “Psycho”.
The next two saved artists were Sawyer Fredericks (Team Pharrell), and Meghan Linsey (Team Blake). After the commercial break, Corey Kent White performed with Country star Lee Brice.
The last two saves by America’s votes were Kimberly Nichole (Team Christina), and Koryn Hawthorne (Team Pharrell). The Bottom Three with Corey Kent White and Hannah Kirby, both from Team Blake, and India Carney (Team Christina). They all gave a performance to fight for their spot in the Top 6 by capturing America’s Twitter “Instant Save” vote.
Blake reacted to Hannah’s performance by stating the most important part about being an artist is being different and that there’s never been anyone on the show like her. Blake said about Corey that he’s “filling a very important spot on the show” because he’s representing Country music. Christina said about India that she’s a true fighter and needs to stay on “The Voice.”
The Instant save voting revealed: India Carny with 39%, Corey Kent White with 40% and Hannah Kirby with 21%. The winner of the voting was India Carney. Carson stated that it was the closet Twitter voting ever!
