Top 9 Live SYTYCD Second Elimination Season 14 Recap

This week’s “So You Think You Can Dance” episode aired on the evening of the solar eclipse, August 21, 2017. Last week’s episode sent home the first contestant of season 14, who was Hip-Hop dancer Robert Green mentored by All-Star Jasmine.

The remaining Top 9 contestants were: Taylor, Mark, Sydney, Logan, Koine, Lex, Kaylee, Kiki, and Dassy. They performed an opening number with their All-Stars choreographed by Luther Brown who also co-wrote the song that they danced to.

The nine dancers performed with their All-Stars, a duet picked at random, as well as their solos along with two group routines. One of which was a timely number reflecting on the current events in Charlottesville choreographed by Travis Wall to song “Strange Fruit” by Nina Simone. One more dancer was eliminated at the end of the show to reveal the remaining Top 8.

LOGAN (Contemporary) & Allison
Last week, Logan was in the bottom three. But, because he showed the judges what he’s “capable of,” he was saved. This week, Logan and All-Star Allison danced a Jive number cheorgraphed by Emma and Sasha. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Mary said “this dance is supposed to be fun”. She said that Logan had “all of that” and Emma and Sasha “navigated the perfect routine” for Logan. Nigel reacted that if Logan “carries on dancing like this” he won’t be in the bottom this week or next. Vanessa said all the little girls fell in love with Logan.

KOINE (Contemporary) & Marko

Last week, Mary named them one of the best of the night. This week, Koine and Marko had to perform Hip-Hop Choreographed by Dave Scott. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Nigel said “Dave you took an innocent young woman and turned her into a ‘wild animal’!” He said Koine took to the character so well and it felt so natural to her. Vanessa reacted “Koine, that was amazing, incredible”. Vanessa said she felt the passion from Kione. Mary praised Koine by saying she turned into a different person. She added that Marko and Koine compliment each other well.

DASSY (Animation) & Fik-Shun
Dassy had to be “sexy” in last week’s Bollywood dance, and sexy again in this week’s jazz number. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Vanessa told Dassy that it was nice seeing her do “something a little different.” Mary said “you brought the funk in this jazz routine. But, wanted Dassy to “hit everything” with confidence, and told Fik-Shun that “picking Dassy was the best decision” he’s ever made. Nigel said the routine was “slightly naughty” and he won’t sleep tonight. He also stated that they were both “clean in the routine.”

MARK (Hip-Hop) & Comfort
Mark and Comfort were choreographed by Talia Favia. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Mary said she was “so affected” by Talia’s choreography – “It was so beautiful.” Mary added, “I almost thought you were going to hurt each other. It was special tonight.” Nigel said he’s watched Comfort grow into a beautiful young artist, and he loves that Mark is willing to do anything that is asked of him. Vanessa stated that the chemistry is “so insane and it’s special to watch that.”

LEX (Contemporary) & Gaby
This week, Lex and All-Star Gaby got a Broadway number choreographed by Warren Carlyle. Lex revealed that when he was eleven and twelve years old, he went on tour as a dancer in “Billy Elliot.” The one dance that he would be most challenged by, he said, is River Dancing. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Nigel said it was “heart-stopping” choreography which definitely showcased Lex’s personality! Vanessa said it was so good and “amazing!” She was surprised by the control Lex has on his body and “makes it look so easy.” Mary reacted “they danced their buttooties off!” She called it “one great moment after another,” and she put them on her world famous Hot Tamale Train!

Sydney and Paul danced Hip-Hop routine choreographed by Luther Brown. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Vanessa said Sydney was a “little too cute” at times during the routine. Mary enjoyed watching two Ballroom dancers do a Hip-Hop number. However, Sydney was a little “too nice through this whole thing,” Mary stated. Nigel reacted, “you have to add the stank to it”, and “it was too cute.” Nigel said the style didn’t sit comfortable on Sydney.

KAYLEE (Contemporary) & Cyrus

Kaylee and Cyrus danced a Jazz number by Spencer Liff. They had to dance with hats in the routine and had the added challenge of not dropping the hats. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Mary reacted that the hat trick seemed to work out for Kaylee tonight. Nigel complimented them by saying it reminded him of “one of those great Fosse dancers.” He added “Cyrus, you were eclipsed tonight by Impavido (Kaylee). Nigel said Kaylee crushed it tonight and was so incredible to watch.

TAYLOR (Contemporary) & Robert
Contemporary dancers Taylor and Robert got Ballroom choreographed by Jean-Marc Généreux. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Nigel said Genereux gave you a very interesting routine with an Urban feel. He thanked him. “It was performed well. But, I didn’t really feel a spark between you.” He reminded them of what he stated to them last week, – you have to keep that “couple to beat” each week. Vanessa said it was very impressive. She said to Taylor, “It’s not easy (to do Samba). I want to see more fire from yu. I want to see you leave it out there a little more.” Mary asked Taylor, “it’s not easy being at the top is it Taylor?” Mary commented, that in the Ballroom world, Samba is the most technically challenging dances there is. Incredibly difficult. She also agreed that they needed more chemistry.

KIKI (Ballroom) and Jenna

Jenna called Kiki “the dark horse of this compeition”. Mandy Moore cheorgraphed the contemporary number they performed. They got a standing ovation from the judges. JUDGES’ COMMENTS: Vanessa called Mandy Moore a “genius.” Kiki and Jenna’s chemistry is “insane” and “radiant”. She added, “so beautiful and incredible. I didn’t expect to get emotional, but I did.” Mary agreed with Vanessa. “Kiki, you found yourself and lost yourself all in the same piece. Mary got emotional when she said, “the best part of this show is watching people have a magical moment. That was the best male ballroom dancer do contemporary that I’ve ever seen on this show.” Nigel said you were fabulous (to Jenna) and it’s her energy that Kiki feeds off of. Nigel said Kiki “is a star tonight!”. Nigel asked if Kiki really kissed Jenna during the routine. They didn’t want to answer. Nigel said Val Chmerkovkiy (Jenna’s boyfriend and “Dancing with the Stars” pro) wouldn’t be happy.

THE RESULTS

BOTTOM THREE: The Top 9 were immediately brought onto the stage for the results. The bottom three were revealed – Dassy, Sydney, Mark.

Nigel called Mark to step forward. He asked if he heard all the girls yell “no” when they announced that he was in the bottom, then told Mark to come down and join them. Mark was saved. Dassy and Sydney were left.

Nigel stated that “we don’t get to know you enough before we vote on you.” He said, it’s tough that they’re losing one lady. But, we’ll see her on the SYTYCD tour. Unfortunately, it was Sydney that was sent home.
