The latest trailer for the upcoming Lindsay Lohan film, “The Canyons” is making waves across the internet. The film is a modern film noire, and has well known names attached to it. Paul Schrader is a critically acclaimed writer and director. He wrote films such as Taxi Driver, American Gigolo, and co-wrote the screenplay for Raging Bull.
The trailer opens up with a photograph of old, tarnished movie theater seats. Than we hear Lohan say “Okay tell me something do you really like movies? When’s the last time you went to see a movie in a theater?” She says as the audience is focusing upon a photograph of a rundown, destroyed concession stand. Then as we see Lohan talking to one of her friends, music is playing in the background as clips of a young, glamorous girl flash across the screen. We see Lohan smoking a cigarette, wearing cliché 1960s over-sized sunglasses. We also see previews of the sex scenes between Lohan and co-star, James Deen. Deen is a well-known Adult Film star because of his popularity amongst tween girls, and scandal with Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham.
The film looks rather interesting, and will most likely incorporate a significant amount of violence and sex. Brett Easton Ellis wrote “American Psycho”, a story that centralizes around Patrick Bateman, a wealthy, schizophrenic man that violently murders people in his own mind. (This is what occurs in the movie adaptation, I have not read the book). Paul Schrader collaborated with Martin Scorsese on “Taxi Driver” which incorporated two controversial subjects, sex, and violence. According to IMDB, Robert De Niro played a mentally unstable Vietnam War veteran. At the end of the movie, he murders one of the villains.
Having an Adult film star in a non- pornographic film should generate curiosity among independent film fans. Lindsay Lohan was once a famous actress, now she is simply infamous and recognized for her bad behavior more than her performances. James Deen often makes headlines and has appeared in media outlets such as GQ, Huffington Post, and his images are plastered all over Tumblr. The film is supposed to highlight the gritty side to tinsel town, and the trailer definitely displays that.
