A Time For Redos at The OSCARS 90 Recap

This year, was the year for a lot of reflection, and re-dos for The 90th Academy Awards. Host Jimmy Kimmel returned after last year’s debacle when the incorrect Best Picture was announced by presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty who both also returned to announce this year’s Best Picture.

It’s been quite a year for the entertainment industry that has since last year’s Oscars ceremony, deep-rooted sexism, well known within the industry for decades, was blown wide open after a New York times article revealed it in black-and-white in an informative article published in October 2017. This article hung super Hollywood mogul and most feared Harvey Weinstein whom eventually lost his film company, and was expelled from The Academy.

Host Kimmel, addressed all of these topics with a well-rounded recap in his opening monolouge and managed to get one political jab in there as well. Kimmel forewarned this year’s nominees with “this year when you hear your name called, don’t get up right away. Give us a minute. We don’t want another thing.” Kimmel vowed that last year’s envelope mix-up was due to when the accountants “went ahead and did comedy on their own,” because he refused to do comedy with them. Lol!

Kimmel also addressed the many males in the industry whom have ben dethroned due to their sexist behavior by making an example out of the Oscar male statue itself. He said Oscar is “the most respected” man in town. He keeps his hands in plain sight, never says a rude word, and (most importantly) he doesn’t have a penis.

Kimmel also touched upon the new wave of diversity in films. He stated that every other inspiring film got crushed by “Black Panther.” Once upon a time, the studio system didn’t believe that a woman, a minority, could open a super-hero movie – “like March of last year!” Lol. This year has also brought the first ever female nominee for Best Cinematography. And, the first woman to be nominated for Best Director in eight years in Greta Gerwig.

Another factual tidbit given by Kimmel was that of all the nominated movies this year, only two made over $100,000. He carried the joke, “we don’t make movies like ‘Call Me By Your Name’ for money, we make them to upset Mike Pence!” A running gag in tonight’s ceremony, was when a jet ski was presented on the stage as a game show-like prize that would be given to the person with the shortest acceptance speech.

In a featurette with “trail-blazers”, celebrities endorsed the present new age of things, versus the old Hollywood. One woman stated “most of my favorite films were directed by men. That was a pre-requisite.” Director of “The Big Sick” said he’s been watching films by straight white dudes his whole life and has related to them. Now, straight white dudes can watch him in movies and relate to it! (audience cheers followed).

“Get ready for more Get Outs, some more Black Panthers’ and ‘A Wrinkle in Time,” exclaimed Lee Daniels. It ended with directors inspiring other young filmmakers to “go make your movie right now.” On your phone!

Some of the big winners of the night were “Shape of Water”, “Dunkirk” and “Blade Runner 2049.” Some stand-out moment came when actor Christopher Walkin received a standing ovation when he came out to present Best Score. Also, NBA star Kobe Bryant won his first Oscar for his written work on short “Dear Basketball.” Yes, that’s right, Kobe Bryant! He stopped dribbling to write a short!

A well deserved first Oscar went to Allison Janney for her portrayal of real-life mother of Olympic skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Unfortunately, actor Denzel Washington missed-out on taking home a coveted Oscar again this year (he was also nominated last year for “Fences”) when he lost out to Gary Oldman who won Lead Actor in “Darkest Hour.” Jordan Peele became the first African American to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay with “Get Out.”

Stand-out moments included when Frances McDormand accepted her Lead Actress award, she told all the female nominees to “stand-up” and said “we need our projects financed…” Host Jimmey Kimmel surprised some unsuspecting movie fans again this year by taking himself along with Gal Gadot, Mark Hamill, Lupita Nyong’o, Margot Robbie next door to a movie crowd at the TCL theater (previously “The Chinese Theater”), to interupt their viewing of “A Wrinkle in Time” by handing-out some snacks to them!
