The NBC Upfronts revealed a long list of new scripted drama shows that have been picked-up for the network. On that list is a very promising show about the behind-the-scenes story to a Broadway stage play based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Singer, Katharine McPhee from “American Idol” season 5 plays a midwestern girl viying for the lead role of Marilyn against real-life stage actress Megan Hilty (“9 to 5: The Musical”).

Other cast members of “Smash” include: Debra Messing (Will & Grace) who plays Julia, a writer who must turn her attention away from adopting a child to a chance of a lifetime to write the play about Monroe; Anjelica Huston (Oscar winner,Prizzi’s Honor), who plays a tenacious producer Eileen who discovers the “Marilyn” project and jumps on board with a brilliant director (Jack Davenport, “Pirates of the Caribbean†films) — whose talent is matched by his cunning and egocentric amorality
