Simon’s Unpopular Picks on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT Season 17 Live Shows Week 4 Recap

“America’s Got Talent” (AGT) season 17 had another round of eleven acts perform on Tuesday night’s Live Show.  As the season winds down, with only two more weeks left, some of the judges thought that the pressure got to most of the acts tonight who didn’t necessarily bring their A-games.

Viewers, along with AGT judges: Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Heidi Mandel, and Sofia Vegara saw a good variety on Tuesday’s show.  These acts included singers, a ventriloquist, a comedian, dancers, dancer & magician, and an A.I. tech act.  The judges had a lot of harsh comments.  Simon told tap dancer Bayley Graham,  “it was slightly underwhelming.”  He told a capella group Acapop Kids,  that once they got buzzed, (by Howie) they did better.

A lot of acts from the U.K. performed on Tuesday’s Live Show as well.  Some of which were Harper who screamed as she sang, and a slapstick stunt act called “The Lazy Generation.”  These two acts happen to be two of  Simon Cowell’s favorites of the night.  Go figure!

Wednesday’s Results show will reveal which next two acts will go to the Finals.  The rest will go home.   River Dance, and former AGT magician contestant Piff the Magic Dragon will perform on the Live Results Show on Wednesday night.

BAYLEY GRAHAM  (Tap Dancer)

Bayley Graham is a tap dancer from  New Zealand, which he said, is one of the birthplaces for tap dancing.   Bayley wants to head his own show in Las Vegas.  After his live show performance, Heidi said any Las Vegas stage would be lucky to have him. Howie said this stage is lucky to have him!  He’s bringing tap dancing back for this generation with a modern sound.  Sofia said there was nothing old-fashioned about his tap dancing and he is probably the first person in the world to tap to Ed Sheeran.  Simon said he did a great first audition.  But, this time was “slightly underwhelming.” The audience booed and Simon responded, “oh, shut up!”  He said Bayley lacked a grand finale and the staircase was too small.  Bayley responded that Simon’s opinion matters and any criticism is good criticism.

ACAPOP KIDS (A Capella Singing Group)

They said their arrangement is more complex and they’re doing more choreography.  They said they want to put their own twist on a capella.  They performed another original song.   Amazingly, more than half way through their set, Howie decided to hit his buzzer!  They sounded amazing.  So, why the “X”?   Howie said they harmonized, they had nice voices.  But, he felt that he was at a school assembly, and it didn’t rise to the level of AGT.

Heidi didn’t agree and thought they created a beautiful sound together.  She liked the message for the young people out there  Sofia said she personally liked their audition better.  But, they are performing with only their voices and they did a great job.  She said it’s a risk to use their original song.  Simon said once they got buzzed, they did better.  He thinks they should do a cover when they come back and wear their own clothes, be themselves.  Acapop said “it felt amazing” and it’s been one of the best experiences of their lives.

JANNICK HOLSTE (Magic/Dancer)

Jannick, who is from Germany and a major Heidi Klum fan, started dancing at six and magic at age nine. He’s been wanting to be part of AGT since he was a little boy.   He said after his AGT audition, now his dance classes are full.  He’s a little celebrity now.  Jannick said this time he has bigger props.  His dream is to win the show, and go around the world and write songs with Heidi.

Jannick got a standing ovation from everyone except Simon.  Heidi said “you really are EVERYTHING!” You bring everything and she loves it.  She asked is it the best dance, the best magic? She knows that she’s having the best time. Simon described Jannick as a cream cake. His dancing is the cream and the magic is the cake. He advised more magic and less dance. “I  just think the dancing is horrible.” Sofia said is it bad, is it good?  I don’t know.  “But they did great!”

LEE COLINSON (Singer)

Lee said he was shocked when Simon reacted to his audition that Lee doesn’t know how good he is.  The judges called his mom on Facetime after his audition.  For the live show, Lee chose to sing Lauren Smith’s  “FLowers” song.  He said it’s dedicated to his mom whom he wants her to know how strong she is and he loves her from the bottom of his heart.  He said his mom means the world to him.  The song had a lot of spoken words, along with the vocals.

Simon said Lee’s audition was amazing.  But, this, he didn’t like. “It didn’t sound like it was the right key for you.” Simon also said it sounded like Lee was reading a letter.  Simon said Lee overthought the song choice. “I don’t think you got it right tonight.  Howie said he doesn’t disagree with Simon.  He said the song had “no range.”  And if he was listening on the radio, he would have turned the station. Heidi said Lee’s voice is sweet and pure.  She has a different connection with him when he sings.  Sofia said there’s something so adorable about him.  He’s so special and this was a little bit of a disappointment because of the song.  Crews asked if he made his mom proud?  Lee said yes, and he’s going to call her right after.

JACK WILLIAMS (Ventriloquist)

It’s only the second time he’s ever performed in front of an audience.  He said making a living as a performer is really hard.  A year ago he was working a retail job.  When he decided to do social media, he got two million followers in two months. Jack said he knew he needed to do live shows, so he got on AGT.  It was shocking for him to see fellow AGT ventriloquist contestant Celia Munoz go home last week.  It’s his dream to have a Las Vegas residency.

Simon was the only judge to give him a standing ovation.  Howie said it’s hard to believe that it’s new to him, performing in front of a live audience.  He said it’s not as original and doesn’t blow him away.  “Hopefully America votes for him.”  Heidi said she’s happy he did the voices of Simon and Obama because they were easier recognizable.   Sofia thought he did great and it was challenging and having the two different puppets was amazing.  Simon said he liked it,  but didn’t love it. It was better than his audition.  “People love this kind of act” and “it’s been the best act tonight by a mile.”

METAPHYSIC (A.I. technology)

Metaphysic’s developers stated that they planned to do the most advanced A.I. anyone has seen.  He said this tech would be amazing in a live show in Las Vegas.  They are upping it from the audition.  They want to make the impossible possible.   This time, they had three singers on stage, who performed as Terry Crews, Simon Cowell, and Howie Mandel.

Simon reacted in terms of talent, originality.  “This is not the best act of the night. This is the best act of the series so far.”  Howie said it was like Il Divo, but Il Stupido.  Howie joked that they had the gumption to use his own voice!  Sofia said she thought it was “scary and fascinating at the same time.”  Crews asked how they would top tonight?   They answered that if they return, they will incorporate a legendary singer with Heidi and Sofia.

THE LAZY GENERATION

During the audition, Simon was the only one to give a standing ovation.  Heidi called it a “hot mess” and wanted to see if they could get better.   They said they wanted to go on AGT because the show has crazy acts like theirs.   They don’t want to let Simon down.

Simon gave a standing ovation and reacted with  “I thought that was beautiful.”  He said it was a step-up from their audition.  “It was different, you risked your lives.”  Sofia buzzed them. She said “it’s unnecessary.” The audience booed her.  ‘It’s not something I want to see ever again.”  Howie described it with one word: “nuts.”

MERISSA BEDDOWS (Singer/Impressionist)

She first started doing voices to make her mom laugh.  When Merissa was a child, she started by imitating Jackie Evancho who was a contestant at the time on AGT.  She said People magazine wrote about her.  Recently she’s been a caretaker for her mother.  She’s doing the voices of the women who inspired her to chase her dreams.

During her live performance, Merissa imitated Cher, as well as a character from the “Family Guy” cartoon show, among others.   Sofia reacted that her voices are so spectacular.  She wishes she had created a story with it.  Simon said the only issue was that her personality didn’t come out in her video package.  “For some reason, we don’t know you properly.”   She said AGT means the world for her and it’s changed her life forever.  Simon said this was better than her audition.  Howie said his issue was that he didn’t know…he missed a couple of the people who she was voicing.  “I think it’s important for us to know.”  Heidi said she’s a woman of many different talents and loves that AGT inspired her to start singing opera.

HARPER (Death Metal Singer)

Pictured: Harper — Photo by: Trae Patton/NBC

Simon called her “brilliant” in her audition.  She sings goth music, or death metal.  Harper decided to sing (or scream) “Bad Habits” song by Ed Sheeran for her live show performance.  She wants to show people that she’s not just a shouter, but also a singer.  Harper said she wants to do whatever it takes to get to the Finals.  She still screamed the song.

Simon was the only judge to give her a standing ovation.  Howie said the only fear he has is that one day she’ll be in real trouble and no one will come because they’ll think she’s singing.  Heidi said death metal isn’t her thing,  But, it’s fascinating to watch her.  Simon loved her performance.  He said her video package was brilliant.  “This is something we don’t normally see and hear.”  He likes that people are going to talk about her and she’s “gutsy.”

MIKE E. WINFIELD (Comedian)

Pictured: Mike E. Winfield — Photo by: Trae Patton/NBC

Mike is from Baltimore, Maryland.  He said if he wins the $1 million his family already spent it.  He said his mom worked every day, and it was his life goal to bring laughter to her.  Two years ago, he lost her to cancer.  Seeing some of the other comedians not get through, he said he trimmed the fat out of his act.

Heidi said no comedian has made it to the Finals, so maybe it will be him.  Sofia told him that she hopes people will vote for him tonight because he was amazing, and he looked like an “old timer.”  Simon said he must have been thinking, “what am I on.”  Then he walked on, and he brought it. “Star quality,  Every part of it.”  Simon thinks America will put him through to the Finals. Howie said “America better vote.”  But, if he doesn’t get voted through, he told him to come and open for him in September.  Mike was super excited.

LILY MEOLA (Singer/ Heidi’s Golden Buzzer)

Lily not only sings songs, but writes the songs as well. She lost her mom and her record deal.  She went onto AGT looking for a sign.  Heidi gave Lily her Golden Buzzer.

For the live show, Lily sang a song she wrote called “Butterfly.”  She said butterflies “are evolving – light times, dark times.”

Heidi gave Lily a standing ovation.  Heidi was so proud of her,  She said her voice was soaring through the room and hoped to see her at the Finale.  Simon reacted, “it’s always a risk when you come onto a live show whether you do your own song or someone else’s song.”  He told her this song was way better than the song she sang at her audition.  Sofia said it’s very emotional every time she comes on the stage and congratulated her for writing that song.  Howie said she does have a beautiful voice.  But, it doesn’t blow the roof off the place.  He told her “good luck.”
